Alan Tarpinian
Alan Tarpinian graduated from New England Conservatory in 1976 and moved to Germany for five years, where he taught at the Neubieberger Volkshochschule in Munich, recorded and performed all over Europe with various jazz artists. In 1982 Tarpinian moved to Eugene and has since performed in the Northwest with internationally renowned artists such as Mal Waldron, David Friesen, Herb Ellis, Charlie Rouse, Eddie Harris, Clark Terry, Bobby Hutcherson, Bucky Pizzarelli, George Cables, Bobby McFerrin, Dick Hyman, Kenny Werner, Poncho Sanchez and many others.
He was the drummer and co-founder of the Eugene Jazz Orchestra (big band), played for 12 years with Caliente, a popular 13 piece Latin-Salsa group and was a faculty member at Lane Community College for 5 years. Since moving to Portland in 2005 he has performed with Nancy King, Steve Christofferson, Dave Frishberg, Glen Moore, Ingred Jensen, Randy Porter, Gordon Lee and other top Portland musicians. In addition to private teaching, Tarpinian also appears regularly as a guest artist with the Eugene Symphony, the Western Oregon State College Jazz Orchestra the Oregon Bach Festival and Oregon Festival of American Music.
