July Podcast

Published by Tom Bergeron under Podcast

The July episode of the TCM Sampler comes from an out-of-print CD by The Tone Sharks. This band, fronted by drummer extraordinaire Dave Storrs, put out a handful of CDs in the early aughts that featured spontaneously-composed pieces. This album is entitled “Intention,” and the cut is “Skates.” The personnel are: Tom Bergeron, alto sax; Tom McNalley, guitar; Page Hundemer, bass; and Dave Stoors, drums. Teal Creek is considering reissuing this album. Let us know what you think!

The May podcast features a cut from Dave Camwell’s new CD, Aeterna — the newest release from Teal Creek. Dave is a brilliant saxophonist currently on the faculty of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. This track is the third movement of Bach’s Double Concerto for 2 violins (BMV 1043), which Dave transcribed for two alto saxophones. You can hear the other two movements and lots of other great music on his CD, available here.

This month’s podcast episode features Polish composer and bassist Krzysztof Majchrzak. His composition Balladak was recorded October 2004 in Lyon, France, and appears on Labirynt’s second album, Exit. In the piece, you’ll hear the impressionistic theme carried and varied by the violin, alto sax and trumpet, while Krzysztof waxes eloquently on the bass.

Next month, we’ll feature a cut from Bugbear: Whirled News Plays the Music of Adam Bates. Stay tuned!

The first episode is “Trikonasana,” a track from the most recent Labirynt CD, Motion Tissue. “Trikonasana” refers to a yoga “asana” or pose. It’s sometimes called the “Triangle Pose.” I hope you enjoy it!
