This month we release Dave Camwell’s second CD, Bach-Centric. It’s a collection of pieces by the transcendent composer, J. S. Bach, transcribed and arranged by Camwell and others for saxophone(s). With this release, we are giving away a free track as an episode of the Teal Creek Music Sampler podcast. Subscribe to the podcast to receive all past and future episodes free!
Dave writes this about the album: “My musical path has always been influenced by the great German master of the Baroque Era. Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) clarity and melodic invention have played major roles in my musical evolution, shaping many of my harmonic conceptions about both jazz and classical styles. The pieces contained on this CD are amongst my favorites from the huge BWV catalogue, and contain all the elements that I love about Bach - great melody, expression, craft, and imagination. My hope is that those who listen to this CD enjoy the coupling of ancient music to a modern instrument. I believe that when great music is performed with skill, care, and spirit, the result will be a joyful experience. I hope you agree.”

Greetings, friends, and best wishes for 2010!
With the new decade comes a new episode of our podcast, Teal Creek Music Sampler. This one is entitled Baía Grande, and it’s from the newest CD from TCM, No Caminho (”On the Path”). If you haven’t checked this one out yet, you’re missing a South American treat!
This cut was composed by Wagner Soares, bassist for the Brazilian trio Dialeto Brasileiro (”Brazilian Dialect”). I met this band in Buzios, a small resort town not far from Rio de Janeiro. They were holding forth in a most groovacious manner at a restaurant called Havana Patio. One thing led to another and now Wagner and Cassio Vianna are here in Oregon and their first record has been released on the Teal Creek label.
So if you haven’t yet subscribed to the Teal Creek Music Sampler, now’s a great time to do so. Through the podcast you’ll have access to this and other samples in plenty of time for your own Carnaval celebration.

The July episode of the TCM Sampler comes from an out-of-print CD by The Tone Sharks. This band, fronted by drummer extraordinaire Dave Storrs, put out a handful of CDs in the early aughts that featured spontaneously-composed pieces. This album is entitled “Intention,” and the cut is “Skates.” The personnel are: Tom Bergeron, alto sax; Tom McNalley, guitar; Page Hundemer, bass; and Dave Stoors, drums. Teal Creek is considering reissuing this album. Let us know what you think!

The May podcast features a cut from Dave Camwell’s new CD, Aeterna — the newest release from Teal Creek. Dave is a brilliant saxophonist currently on the faculty of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. This track is the third movement of Bach’s Double Concerto for 2 violins (BMV 1043), which Dave transcribed for two alto saxophones. You can hear the other two movements and lots of other great music on his CD, available here.

This month’s podcast episode features Polish composer and bassist Krzysztof Majchrzak. His composition Balladak was recorded October 2004 in Lyon, France, and appears on Labirynt’s second album, Exit. In the piece, you’ll hear the impressionistic theme carried and varied by the violin, alto sax and trumpet, while Krzysztof waxes eloquently on the bass.
Next month, we’ll feature a cut from Bugbear: Whirled News Plays the Music of Adam Bates. Stay tuned!
