Sharon Porter & Matt Cooper

Two for the Road

This road trip through the great American songbook runs the gamut from Duke Ellington to James Taylor. Also featured on Clovis (TC-2006), pianist Matt Cooper was a prizewinner in the Monk Competition (1988) and is the author of a book on Ellington’s piano styles. Cooper crafts his accompaniments from a blend of jazz, classical and gospel styles that have been described by critics as “memorable,” “thoughtful,” and “masterful” (Eugene Weekly, Washington Post, Blue Light).

Sharon Porter

Vocalist Sharon Porter is a Rosemary Clooney-styled song stylist who’s not afraid to show her Kentucky roots. Her background includes singing in Cincinnati-area vocal jazz ensembles and Inland Northwest bluegrass groups. Cooper and Porter’s interplay is the fruit of nearly three decades of collaboration. They are backed here by a noteworthy pair of Spokane musicians: bassist Scott Steed (Joe Williams, Diane Schuur, Nancy King, Horace Silver) and drummer Michael Waldrop (Triangularity Trio, Michael Waldrop/Jack Cooper Big Band).
